Behind the Scenes: The Evolution of “Prelude To A Dream”
When you listen to Volume Five (Goodbye), the album hits you right away with high-energy pop songs like Goodbye, At A Crossroads, and We Need To Let Each Other Go. They keep the mood fast and loud. But then comes Prelude To A Dream, an original song that completely shifts the pace into a slow, gentle indie-pop melody.
That slower rhythm fits the story of the lyrics. The song is about someone who struggles with low self-esteem. He feels like he is not good enough to even talk to the person he is interested in, seeing her as someone far out of reach. The sad, heavy feeling in the music matches his quiet heartbreak.
The music video tells that same story through simple imagery. It shows a slideshow of pictures of the woman he admires. In every single shot, a white veil covers her face. That veil represents the walls the speaker builds in his own mind, making him believe that he will never truly know her and that something will always keep them apart.
To match this feeling of distance, the speaker in the video never shows his face. He is either hidden entirely as a shadow or filmed from angles where his face remains completely out of view. It is a creative and powerful way to show how someone can feel completely invisible next to the person they’re infatuated with.
The Push for Commercial Reimagination
When you set out to build the world of a music video for a song like Prelude To A Dream (Reimagined), you want the main character to finally have a face for the audience to see. More than that, you want his eyes to stay completely locked on the person he is infatuated with. He has to look utterly spellbound, caught in a trance where he simply cannot tear his gaze away, even for a single second. Every look he gives her has to show a deep, consuming wonder.
To make this kind of intense obsession believable on screen, the young woman he worships cannot just be conventionally pretty. Her face needs a striking, undeniable innocence and a pure kind of grace. She has to carry a quiet softness that makes his extreme fascination feel earned rather than strange. That specific balance—his heavy, endless devotion paired with her gentle, untouched calm—becomes the core visual guide for who these characters are and how they look to the world.
Crafting the Narrative: From Observation to Devotion
Setting the scene for a first meeting always requires careful thought, especially when that moment changes everything. That core idea is what shapes the opening of the story, placing a man alone at a table inside a high-end, quiet restaurant for lunch.
He sits by himself in the bustling dining room, waiting for his food to arrive while the ambient noise of clinking silverware and murmuring voices fills the air. With no phone to scroll through and no companion to talk to, his eyes naturally wander across the room, taking in the elegant decor and the other patrons.
That is when he spots her. She is sitting not too far away, also dining entirely by herself. The fact that she is alone is the very first detail that catches his attention, mirroring his own solitude in the crowded room. But as he looks closer, his casual glance turns into intense focus.
He notices that she is not just eating alone; she is deeply unhappy. A heavy, suffocating sadness hangs over her table, and as he watches, he realizes she is grieving. Quiet tears well up in her eyes, threatening to spill over, and her entire posture speaks of profound heartbreak.
Seeing her pain draws him in completely. The more he looks at her, the more the initial pity shifts into a stunned appreciation for her striking features, revealing a breathtaking face hidden beneath the weight of her sorrow. This emotional spark serves as the exact jumping-off point for the lyrics of the song.
As the narrative of the video unfolds, he finds himself unable to just finish his meal and walk away. He decides to follow her when she leaves—not out of any malicious or stalking intent, but purely out of a protective instinct. She looks so frail, fragile, and overwhelmed that he worries something bad might happen to her in her vulnerable state.
I included scenes where he stands not too far from her. In one specific shot, he looks completely ready to walk right up and ask if she needs a hand with anything. But the moment of action always slips away, swallowed whole by the heavy weight of overthinking.
To show that internal struggle on screen without using a single word, the camera moves and pans slowly down to his shoes. You watch as he takes one, maybe two small steps forward, closing the physical distance. But just as quickly, the momentum dies. He pulls his feet back, retreating the exact same distance he just gained, planting himself right back where he started.
That sudden, jerky movement tells the whole story. It captures what it feels like to be trapped inside your own head, paralyzed by doubt, standing frozen on the fragile edge of finally making a move, only to step back into safety.
Literary Allusions
I wanted the video to keep pushing the story forward, showing how his feelings change the longer he follows behind her through the busy streets of London. What starts as simple curiosity quickly turns into a fierce, almost spiritual devotion. He begins to put her on a pedestal, looking at her with such intense admiration —that she starts to feel less like a normal person and more like a goddess walking among ordinary crowds.
Even though he is following her every move, he is careful not to cross the line into creepy behavior. There are no malicious intentions or aggressive stalking tactics. His actions come from a place of quiet concern because he can see the heavy weight she is carrying. She is completely consumed by her sorrow, and it shows in every single step she takes.
As she drifts through the city, her posture is slumped and her steps are slow. She looks entirely lost, wandering the streets with no clear destination or sense of purpose. Because she is drowning in such deep grief, he feels a quiet need to stay close. He just wants to watch from the shadows and make sure she does not make any reckless mistakes while her mind is clouded by what appears to be pain.
After a long and dreary journey, she finally arrives back at her apartment. But getting home does not bring her any relief. Instead of going inside to find a safe space, she walks straight out onto her balcony and stands there in the open air, wearing that exact same expression of heartbreak.
Seeing her out there makes him even more anxious and nervous for her safety. The situation feels increasingly fragile, but he still cannot step in. All he can do is stand watch from a distance, keeping his eyes locked on her to ensure she does not do anything dangerous or permanent to herself.
The Shadow and the Goddess
The afternoon air feels heavy and still as he follows behind her, keeping just enough distance to remain unseen. With every step she takes, a quiet curiosity seeps deeper into his thoughts, turning into a restless ache in his chest. He looks at her and wonders how it is possible for someone so striking, so breathtakingly beautiful, to carry such a profound and heavy weight of sorrow. Her shoulders seem burdened by an invisible grief, a deep sadness that feels entirely out of place in someone who looks like she belongs in a painting.
His mind races with frustration and disbelief. If another person caused her this pain, who could possibly have the cold heart to break her, to hurt her, or to let go of something so pure? It defies all logic to him. He convinces himself that if he ever had the incredible fortune to hold someone like her in his life, he would treat her as his greatest blessing. He would guard her happiness fiercely, making sure she never had to shed a single tear.
As the minutes blur together and he continues to follow her path through the winding streets, a silent battle rages inside his own mind. He wrestles constantly with the question of why he cannot just walk up to her. What is stopping him? Why must he remain a ghost in the background?
To him, she has long since stopped being just a stranger. She is a goddess walking among ordinary mortals. Her beauty is rare and timeless, and the sweet innocence she exudes is unlike anyone he has ever encountered in his life. But this extreme reverence acts as a double-edged sword. It crushes his confidence completely, filling him with a paralyzing sense of unworthiness.
In the quiet panic of his thoughts, he compares his own reflection to Victor Hugo’s tragic character, Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, helplessly longing for the gypsy beauty Esmeralda. He feels clumsy, flawed, and entirely unsuited for someone so radiant. Yet, unlike that famous, heartbreaking tale, I didn’t want his story to end in despair without him even trying to take a shot at his chances and so the script must be rewritten.
Gathering every fragile ounce of courage he can muster, he steps away from his hiding place. He walks up to a small flower stand to purchase a single, long-stemmed red rose. With trembling hands, he approaches her and introduces himself, bracing for the rejection his anxiety has spent all day predicting.
Instead, the nightmare scenario dissolves into thin air. She looks at him, registers the gesture, and accepts the rose with a genuine, welcoming smile. The tension evaporates from the air, and without a word of hesitation, they turn and walk side by side together off into the sunset.
The Cinematic Twist
But in order to stay true to the premise of the poem, I decided the video needed a twist at the end. The magical world feels entirely true to life up until this very final moments. Just as the experience reaches its emotional peak, the illusion shatters with the sharp, jarring ring of an alarm clock. This abrupt transition pulls our protagonist away, instantly back to reality. This scene is intended to cast immediate doubts to viewers on whether the adventure actually happened or was merely a product of a dream. Yet, rather than leaving the character disappointed by the sudden awakening, the poem resolves with a lingering smile on his face, showing that the emotional value and beauty of the experience mattered far more than whether it was physically real.
Bringing a project like this together takes a lot of time and careful thought. Every part of the video, from storyboarding to how it’s finally presented in visual form, is designed to match the mood of the music. It is all about giving viewers a chance to feel something new and get lost in a different world for a little while.
